Gourmet recipe that you can make for [nearly] free
Look around at the Davis trees in yards and public spaces - there is gorgeous fruit just sitting there. I am not recommending stealing, but ask permission - chances are owners will be happy to have their fruits used. Autumn fruits can be exotic - owners may not know what to do with them. Here is something I made the other day with ingredients from within 1000 ft of my house.
Fuyu Persimmons (small hard flat type) - about 2 per person
Walnuts
Pomegranates
Shallot
Champagne Vinegar & Walnut Oil
Slice persimmons in thin discs and arrange on plate. De-seed 1 or 2 pomegranates - Squeeze half of one to make juice. Chop shallot very fine, blend with a few tbsp of champagne vinegar and several tbsp of pomegranate juice. Stir in several tbsp of walnut oil. Spoon dressing over persimmons. Sprinkle with toasted walnuts and pomegranate seeds. Delicious and interesting! Halfway between salad and dessert.
